Profile

The Preclinical Research Programme aims to strengthen translational and application-oriented research at the preclinical level. The nature and objective of the scientific projects focuses on deepening the collaboration between experimental and clinically oriented research directions. The nature of the research programme and its emphasis on the transfer of science and research results into practice also contributes to facilitating the long-term sustainability of the NIMH and its continued funding. Strengthening the translational approach appears to be crucial for the development of the science and medicine centre.

The approach to specific scientific projects is based on the interdependence of bioanalytical chemistry, animal modelling, molecular biology and imaging methodologies. The study of CNS disorders and the influence of drugs on them has significant specificities compared to other organ systems. Symptoms of neuropsychiatric disorders typically occur only in patients. However, their neurobiological substrate or analogous symptoms also occur among animals. This allows the use and validation of animal models, either with induced neurobiological changes or with altered genetic background (GMO), which allow exact sophisticated and often invasive approaches, thus greatly enriching the methodological potential compared to the relatively limited possibilities of studying neurobiological changes in clinical practice. On the other hand, an experimental approach in this field requires intensive contact with clinical practice and a thorough insight into the challenges facing contemporary biological psychiatry. It allows for close collaboration and discussion between experimental and clinical sites. The concept of the Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory is based on a translational approach in close staff and project interaction with other structures of the NIMH. Technology transfer and contract research will be an essential part of the laboratory's activities.
